What’s A Momma to Do?

I freely admit I have been a wreck the past couple of days.  That is why I didn’t do the usual Follow Friday Fill In hop from Hilary and have just basically stayed away from my blog for a few days.  You see, one of my fur babies, Buddy, is sick.  I took him to the vet because his breathing was really fast in comparison to Holly’s.  I kept watching them sleeping side by side and it was obvious.  He was still eating and drinking and acting normal other than the breathing thing.  He was racing around chasing her.  But the breathing bothered me.

So after leaving him with the vet for xrays and further exams we discovered that Buddy has a rare thing called Feline Chylothorax .  Apparently for some reason (there are several possibilities but in Buddy’s case they are not sure why) the cavity around his lungs is filled up with a milky white very thick fluid.  They pulled a lot off.  I mean more than a lot.  He spent the night at the vets and last night we took him to the emergency vet service clinic so they could keep an eye on him over the weekend.  So far he has seen 5 different vets.  He is somewhat of a rock star.  He is cooperative and doing fine but still a very sick kitty.

One thing that the limited research has indicated is that a plant supplement called Rutin  which in humans is often used for blood vessel protection along with many other things.  Somehow the connection with giving a cat with chylothorax Rutin came up and it seems to help with the build up of triglycerides  in their system. Buddy is now destined to be on a low fat diet if he pulls through all of this.

The emergency clinic just called as I am writing this and asked if they could do bloodwork.  The other place had not done much of that yet as they were trying to limit the stress on Buddy and I think they are pretty confident that this is what it is.  I guess this vet wants to make sure it is not an intestinal thing so more tests for poor Buddy.  He is such a sweet kitty and they have all loved on him and commented on how sweet he is.  Of course he is!

But yesterday things were looking pretty grim and I was thinking we were going to have to make a pretty hard decision.  We still may.  I feel the same for my pets as I do for my loved ones.  Quality of life is important.  If life is going to be a series of invasive procedures that really do not “fix” the problem and the quality of life is jeopardized I don’t think it is fair to Buddy.  I could barely function yesterday during the day.   I think it is the accumulation of everything that we have gone through in the past year catching up.  It hit me and it hit me hard.  Our time here in Lima is winding down and the reality that we are moving on and dealing with the death of my father in law is a fact now.  And Buddy and Holly have been what has kept me sane at times.   So when one of them is faced with a life threatening disease it rocked my world.

So if you are so inclined, please say a prayer for my Buddy and for Holly who misses her litter mate.  Hard decisions may still be ahead of us and I want to do the right thing.  For all the pet lovers out there you know what I mean.  They are part of our lives.  I don’t think I am a crazy cat lady but I do love my animals.  They have brought much love and joy to our lives and I can’t think of how sad I will be if one of them is not there.

Buddy and Holly

  1. Donna @ The House on the Corner says:

    Beth Ann,

I am so so sorry for all that you’re going through. I’m also one of those that love their pets without reservation. They give us so much, and ask for so little in return. I understand completely. I’m praying for your little Buddy and his family.

    • Donna, Thank you SO much!!! It means so much to me to have folks “understand” what it is to have a family that is beyond the human family! I know that there are many out there who are in total agreement with us. These kitties have helped me through some really tough times and don’t ask much in return. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  2. I’m so sorry you are going through this Beth Ann. Hopefully the experts will figure it out. It sounds like you are doing all you can for Buddy.

    Hang in there.

(Which one in the picture is Buddy?)

  3. I am so sorry to hear about this, I hope everything goes in a positive direction.

  4. Beth Ann, my thoughts and purrayers are with you & yours. It is so hard to see them sick; they are family. My heart goes out to Buddy, and to little Holly too. I know how close littermates especially are. I am hear if you want to talk or just need to vent. I used to be a vet tech & have done cat rescue for 30 years. I’m in tears right now. I know what you are going through. You are a good Momma. Hugs, hugs.

    • Thanks, McGuffy Ann! The vet just did the bloodwork and said that it all came back really good so that is a plus. He is dehydrated but with the fluid issue they are reluctant to do any subcu so gonna watch him today and see how he does. He hates wet food so they are trying to find some lowfat dry for him to crunch on and get him to drink. Thanks for the hugs. I am better today but it is still tough. I know you understand. Thanks again.

  5. Oh Beth Ann , I am so sorry to hear about Buddy. Alex and I will be praying like mad for him, and for you. Believe me, I understand how hard it is when your pet is sick… They are such an important part of our families and our lives. They love us so unconditionally, and rely on us so greatly. Buddy knows how much you love him and that you are doing everything in your power to make him well again…. Sending you hugs, and if there is anything I can do, please let me know.

    • I kept thinking about you and Alex through this, Hilary. I don’t know what the future is but he is in good hands, I feel, and so far with seeing 5 docs who are all talking about him I think that is good. They all have been conferring and researching and all but there is not a lot of info out there on this and some of it is conflicting. I hope that since he is relatively young and has been a fighter before with his “string” incident he will be strong again. One day at a time. Thanks for the prayers and hugs and support. I really appreciate them.

  6. All good thoughts and prayers for Buddy and this situation. I think that those of us who are nurturers lavish some of that attention on our critters once our kids grow up. I have a powerful attachment to my cats, too, and I’d be beside myself if one of them were sick.

Hope this all turns out well, and that the vet community learns something useful from Buddy’s illness.

    • Ann I think you hit it on the head. My husband says I always need someone or something to mother and he is right. The nurturing side of me is just who I am and my best role in life has been and will always be the role of mom. I am trusting the vets to do the right thing and give me good advice. Thanks so much for your kind words. It helps. A lot.

  7. I was wondering where you were yesterday and to hear it’s because of this breaks my heart. I really hope Buddy pulls through because having had to make this very hard decision ourselves I know what you are going through…You all will be in my thoughts!!!

    • Thanks, Susi!!! I am hoping he is a “battler” as we called tough guys in Australia! He already had a string adventure when he was little so hopefully he will come through this as well as he did that. Thanks for the good thoughts.

  8. Oh, Beth Ann, I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. We do love our pets just as we do our loved ones and I am praying for Buddy and his momma. Sending prayers, love and light to you both and trusting Buddy will be better soon. Love you!

    • Thanks so much, Diane. It has really hit me hard and I think it is just the accumulation of “life”. Today we are resuming sorting through yet more stuff here at Dad’s so I am a bit distracted which is good. And Holly is “helping” by rolling around in all the stuff we are sorting….what can I say? It makes me smile. Thanks for the prayers, friend. It means a lot.

  9. I miss having a pet to nurture, your husband is so understanding. And my heart is breaking that Buddy is so sick. It’s said cats have nine lives, here’s hoping Buddy gets to live them all! Hugs.

    • My husband is VERY understanding. He loves Buddy as much as I do, I think. I appreciate all the love and concern you guys are showing me. Makes me teary.

  10. They are members of the family after all. I am wishing well for Buddy and all of the Chiles.

  11. I’m saying prayer right now for your sweet little kitties. It’s good you noticed the breathing problem and hopefully Buddy can be saved. Both your cats are so cute!

  12. We are so sorry to hear Buddy is not feeling well. We are purring for him and hope the v-e-t can help him.

    Wally, Ernie & Zoey

    • Wally, Ernie and Zoey—you made me laugh with the spelling out of V-e-t. In our house it is when the c-a-r-r-i-e-r comes out that they get nervous. Thanks so much for the sweet comment and the thoughts. Not sure how this is going to turn out but we are praying hard !

  13. We’re sorry Buddy is sick and you are all going through this. Purrs and woofs for Buddy’s health.

    • thanks for the sweet comment and for the purrs and woofs. You can’t know how much it means to us that he has all of these friends out there that he didn’t know about!!!

  14. We ready about Buddy on the CB and wanted to come by and say we’re purring and paying that he is better soon.

    The Florida Furkids

    • Florida Furkids, Thanks so much for stopping by and sending your thoughts and prayers for Buddy. He is a fighter and I hope that he is going to be strong enough to get through this. We love this guy!!! Thanks again.

  15. Our friend Alex told us Buddy is quite sick, so we came over to let you know we are sending our most earnest purrs and prayers that he will recover soon. We are also purring for Holly … we know how attached littermates can be.

    • thanks so much!!! We are not sure how this is all going to turn out but are so grateful for all of the prayers and sweet thoughts coming from all of Alex’s friends. We think he is pretty cool! Keep the prayers coming. They are needed and appreciated!

  16. I heard that Buddy wasn’t feeling well and wanted to let you know that I am sending good thoughts and purrs that soon he will be back to his ole self.

    • Thanks Gracie!!! I really appreciate the sweet thoughts and purrs and prayers. I am hoping he is tough enough to beat this. Time will tell. Thanks again.

  17. Sending healing purrrrrayers to Buddy, and a few comforting purrrrrrrrss to his Mom & his sidekick Holly.

    • Thanks so much for the sweet words and purrs!! Buddy is laying with me on the bed while I type this and is purring up a storm. He is definitely not out of the woods but at least he is home where he is more comfy. His sister, Holly, is being ridiculous and hissing at him so now we have to get her straightened out. Women!!! Thanks so much for stopping by.

  18. All of us at the Cat Blogosphere are purring and purraying for Buddy.
Poor little guy, sounds like him has been through a lot.
    Love & Purrs,

    • Thank you so much for stopping by, KC, and for the sweet thoughts. Buddy came home last night but not sure how this is going to progress. We are going to have to keep a close eye on him. Thanks again.

  19. I am saying a prayer for Buddy. This is a difficult time and I hope all turns out well Beth Ann. I feel the same way about my animals and my heart goes out to you.

  20. My sisters and I are all praying for Buddy and we are sending our best purrs his way too. Hilary and Alex told us so we wanted to stop by.

    • Thanks so much for stopping by. I am so grateful for the outpouring. Not sure how this is going to turn out but I am trying to be positive. Thanks again.

  21. We saw this posted on the Cat Blogosphere and came to give our purrs to Buddy, and to you. Our mom happens to agree with you regarding quality of life, but we all hope it won’t come to that.

We’re crossing our paws for Buddy and sending Light (the mom’s word for positive, healing universal energy).

    Peace and Blessings.

    • Thank you so much—you can not even begin to understand how much all of you from Cat Blogosphere mean to me already!!! Thanks to Hilary and Alex for putting Buddy and what was going on with him up there. Thanks so the words of encouragement.

  22. We are so sorry to hear your news – we had never ever heard of this and can understand how upset you are. Thank goodness you spotted it and hope that Buddy’s vets can help treat this condition.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  23. We are sending healing purrs to Buddy. And we are sending comforting purrs to Holly and you cause we knows you are worried about Buddy. We has our paws crossed that Buddy pulls through and that his condition can be managed successfully for many years with the proper diet.

  24. We are sending healing purrs to Buddy and comforting purrs to everyone (especially Holly) as we know you are very worried about Buddy.

  25. Me and my cat Charlie came over from the CB. We are sad to hear about dear sweet Buddy. We are sending tons of purrs and healing hugs his way. We also send Holly lots of hugs – it’s so scary for her too. We hope Buddy recovers, we hope he gets better. Take care

    • Thank you so much!!! I am so happy that we are getting all of this kitty love from CB folks!! It is like a big family!!! Thank you for taking the time to stop by and tell us of your prayers for Buddy. We are hanging in there.

  26. We heard about Buddy on the CB and are sending him lots of healing purrs and comforting (((hugs))) to you. We hope the vet can get him on the right medication to help him get better.
    Purrrrrrrrrrrrs Eric and Flynn

    • Thank you so much for the thoughts and purrs!!! IT is pretty wonderful how many folks are chiming in here!!! I am thinking we have a rough week ahead of us but am glad he is home for the moment. Thanks for stopping by–it means a lot.

  27. WE also heard about Buddy on the CB and we sure are sending tons and tons of purrs that the vets can figure out a way to help Buddy. We understand perfectly how you feel. It is so darn hard when they get sick. I am a crazy cat lady so I do understand how you feel and sure am sending some prayers. We also have a thing here, we have donkeys and they will cross their hooves for someone and they are crossing their hooves right now for Buddy. So he just has to get better. Keep us posted.

    • Thank you so much for the sweet comments and especially for the donkey crossing hooves! I will tell Buddy he even has donkeys pulling for him! Thanks so much!

  28. 'Kaika's mom says:

Poor little Buddy! Yes, chylothorax is a bad one. Rutin is available in health food stores and online as well, if you can’t find any locally. Rutin sourced from buckwheat is supposed to be the best form, and the supplement bottle should list that information. Best wishes for a good outcome for Buddy. Healing energy from me and healing purrs from the kitties.

    ‘Kaika’s mom

    • Thanks so much! The vets are a little perplexed because the research is kind of all over the place. He has been on the rutin since Saturday so I am hoping that it is helping but time will tell. He is not fond of me giving it to him….

  29. We came over from the CB to send Buddy, Holly, and their family lots of purrs and hugs. Having had very sick kitties, we know just what an emotional roller coaster ride this is. We will hold you all in our thoughts.

    • Thank you so much for stopping over!!! And for the sweet comments. It is indeed a roller coaster ride and I am hoping that we can hang on for dear life!!! Thanks so much!

  30. Helen Brown says:

I’ve never prayed for a cat before but I just did. Get well soon Buddy.

  31. Helen Brown says:

I have never prayed for a cat before but I just did. I hope he will be OK soon.

  32. Helen Brown says:

I have never prayer for a cat but I just did. Get well soon Buddy.

  33. We saw Buddy isn’t doing well and stopped by to tell you how sorry we are, and that we hope he’ll do better soon. We are purring things are better than they appear right now. Poor fella! Poor little Holy too! Our hearts are with all of you.

    • Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting on Buddy and his ordeal. He is purring and acting all happy but I know that we are not out of the woods yet—this could be a long process and we are going to have to just take it a day at a time. Knowing there are folks like you out there who are caring and concerned about him is amazing to me. Thank you.

  34. We are sending and sharing as many purrs and prayers as we can for your sweet and loving Buddy. We hope you find answers and treatment for his condition, and that all will be well soon.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts!!! We all appreciate it more than you can ever know!!! What a great community of animal lovers is out there!!!! Thank you!

  35. kozykatkondo says:

We just heard about Buddy and we are sending your our mega purrs and hope Buddy feels better really soon.

  36. When we heard that Buddy is very ill, we came right over to offer some purrs and purrayers to him. We hope you get good news soon.

    • Thank you so much for your sweet words. Buddy is happy to be at home and we will know more on Friday after the Rutin has been in his system awhile. We just are not sure at this point and sure appreciate all of the support from the Catblogosphere!!!!

  37. Poor Buddy! We’re purring for him, and for you so you can remain calm and do whatever is best for him.

  38. Beth Ann, I’m sending a prayer for Buddy and for Holly and your family. Our cats are our kids, I totally understand!

    Hug, Nani
    cat-mom of Kaline and Carla

    • Thanks, Nani! I am so happy to meet you and know that you are sending prayers for Buddy. I am just loving him and giving him the Rutin and hoping we get better news on Friday. Thanks so much!

  39. I have a cat with chylothorax. I was tapping him 2 times a week for the first month, removing up to 400ml a week. I gave him rutin, first a 1000ml, after a month, I only had to tap him every 2 weeks, so I upped the Rutin even more, eventually I upped it to 3000ml a day and after 4 months I am no longer tapping him. I purchased the Rutin at the Vitamin Shop in pill form. I crushed it and put it in his food and put the pills in Pill Pockets. By the way, the Doctors recommended that we put him down. Its been almost 2 years since my cat was diagnosed with this disease. I have not had to take him to the vet since Dec 2010.

    • Lawrence, Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to tell me about your kitty!!! Our vet recommended 750 ml a day and that is what we have been doing since he was diagnosed. We have only had the fluid removed during that first hospitalization and though his breathing is still more rapid than normal he “acts” fine otherwise. We put him on a low fat diet and the last xrays showed much more clear area. I am taking him to the vet this week and hope that his progress continues. It is good to hear of your great success!!! I know this will be a lifetime thing for him but we are hoping to stay on top of it. I am so encouraged by what you told me today!!! Thank you again for taking the time to tell me of your wonderful success!!!! The vets did a lot of reading on it and my little Buddy became their One in a Million cat. Sounds like yours is, too!!!
